Up for sale, a 1990's Guild S4CE acoustic electric guitar with a unique body design and first generation preamp. One of Guild's most innovative models, the S4CE was an idea that came to Guild from Nashville. The body is the size of the famous Guild Bluesbird, with an acoustic chamber that is routed from a solid piece of mahogany. The body is then fitted with an "X" brace solid spruce top. The result is an acoustic electric instrument that is the size of an electric guitar, but with the sound of a true acoustic. The 2 body depth and 14 lower bout makes for a very comfortable playing experience indeed, and the instrument has a surprising amount of presence and bark when played acoustically.
Of course where this guitar really shines is when plugged in via the preamp, which is the first incarnation designed by Guild, featuring a Volume knob and stacked Treble/Bass control. For a tone that retains the warmth and detail of an acoustic, yet with great feedback rejection and easy EQ shaping, the S4CE is a perfect companion and an instrument suited to a unique task. The guitar is also nice and light at only 7lbs 1oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Guild is dialed in with 12-53 strings and comfortable action. The mahogany neck has a medium C shape that borders on the slender side of things with good shoulder and consistent profile depth as you travel up the fretboard.
The original frets retain their full factory height with well rounded crowns, showing only light wear beneath the B string on frets 1-5. The rosewood fretboard boasts dot inlay, and the nut measures 1 11/16 in width. On the headstock, the original Grover tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch reliably. The electronics work as intended, the compensated saddle has plenty of height, and the rosewood bridge sits flush with the spruce top on all edges. The guitar does have one repaired crack on the top extending behind the bridge. There is some finish touchup along the repair, and other cosmetic wear includes a couple chips around the headstock edges, some scuffing on the back (on the lower bout in particular), and a few pick marks in the strum path. The neck profile is clean aside from two tiny shallow finish chips roughly behind the 10th fret.
This Guild S4CE is a great example of Guild's rarer and more unique models. Check out our shop "Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, " and please let us know if we can answer any questions!
