NEARLY 14000 TRADES CHECK OUT OUR FEEDBACK..... 5.5K LAZY PEOPLE COULDN'T BE BOTHERED TO LEAVE FEEBACK. WE SPECIALISE IN NICHE GUITARS. This is a MADE IN JAPAN, MIJ, GRETSCH DORADO 5989 GRAND CONCERT ACOUSTIC.

Gretsch had been a family run company ever since Friedrich Gretsch founded it in New York in 1883. In the mid sixyties, then president Fred Gretsch Jnr. Found himself with no heir interested in running the company and decided to sell.

The deal was completed on 31st July 1967. By the early 70's the Baldwin owned Gretsch company started to organise importation of a variety of Acoustic Guiatrs, including the Dorado line, from the Matsumoko Company in Japan. Matsumoko were already building Guitars for the likes of Epiphone and Aria and the similarities of some of these different Branded guitars is striking to say the least. Matsumoku produced guitars, or parts of guitars, for. Professional series (USA guitar company).

American owned Unicord contracted Matsumoku to build most of its. Matsumoku built many early Greco guitars as well as.

These Dorado 5898's were only produced for 2 years between 1971 and 1972 and were superceded by the Dorado 5965 Grand concert in the 1973 catalogue. The 5965 was the basically the same spec guitar but with enclosed tuners, Block inlays, a humingbird style scratchplate and a new cherry sunburst colour. 1971/1972 Gretsch Dorado Grand Concert Guitar. Solid Spruce Close Grained Top, Mahogany and Back sides, Mahogony Neck, 20 frets, neck joint at 14th fret. Pearloid dot inlays, Adjustable bridge, Plain Black Scratch plate, Open faced open Geared Nickel tuners.

This is a Very Rare guitar indeed, not too many off them about which is a shame as they are superb instruments. There is virtually nothing written about them on line but I have written to GRETSCH and gleaned some information. They also had very limited info but sent me a photocopy of the 71 and 72 catalogue Dorado pages from their archives.

Bearing in mind that this guitar is nearly 50 years old there are very few marks on it. The top side is absolutely beautiful. No buckle rash and lacquer split or peeling. Solid spruce top with beautiful close grained showing through.

A Mahogany neck with a 24 3/4 Scale length, it has a Brazillian Rosewood fingerboard with 20 frets, joined to the body at the 14th fret. The Bridge plate which is also Rosewood is well. Positioned to provide great tonal stability and intonation.

The bridge is adjustable using two chrome screws, one either side. The rounded Grand concert shaped body shape gives it a wonderful, chiming treble balanced by the full-bodied, booming bass with plenty of volume and projection and a brilliant level of resonance. Traditionally a Mahogany body topped by Spruce, a warm and tonally complex wood will bring a brightness and energy to the mix.

These guitars were copies of the Martin concept. The Japanese literally stripped guitars down and then copied them faithfully, something that the Japanese were very good at. This Guitar sings out like a far more expensive Guitar. Japanese built Matsumuko guitars are already collectable and a quality MIJ instrument in this condition is only going to go up in value as time goes by.
