There is some rare footage of CW on YouTube playing this guitar. If Cliff were an American artist he would no doubt have been a huge star in the mould of Waylon Jennings or George Jones, but the country scene in Europe - although large - does not bestow the deserved hero-worship and appreciation upon its performers in the way Nashville does. Cliff was a rising star and recording artist on the country scene in the 70s and 80s, then music changed and the work dried up, as did the recording deals, so he went to the clubs to ply his trade, still playing into the early 2000s before fading away - a familiar country music cliche maybe, but Cliff walked the walk and he talked the talk. He was no wannabe - and he never compromised - he worked hard and lived hard.
Cliff Whelan was a fascinating man, a devoted musician and performer. Now, this amazing guitar remains, and plays on. This guitar is marvellously road worn in all the right places. Its sound is rich and clear.I recently had the guitar checked over and serviced by a professional luthier. He sensitively cleaned it, set it up and put on new light gauge strings.
There is an ancient crack in the headstock which has been there for decades but is sturdy and does not affect playing in any way. Update: it may not be a crack at all. See message at bottom of description. The luthier was extremely impressed with the guitar and went over it minutely. He even found Cliffs autograph under the scratch plate when he took it off to clean it! The hard guitar case is original and has been left as is. It still contains a pouch containing his plectrums and a beautiful set of rosary beads, there are strings in there, plugs, connectors etc.
The usual things you find in a gigging guitar case. All these extra items are included in the sale.
This guitar is a players guitar and it wants and needs to be playing. Check out Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. He owns and plays one of these guitars (with an added Bigsby tremelo) and absolutely praises the sound it gives out. Just awaiting a new loving owner and a new chapter to its story. Ready to plug in and play!Great message from an eBayer who knows these guitars well. I have many Harmonies like this. It is most likely not a break, but a separation where they added the wings to the headstock. All larger Sovereign-like paddle headstocks are like this, similar to the wings that Gibson adds to widen headstocks. I only mention this as I dont want anyone to be under the impression there is a break, when in fact there is just a separation of the wood! Excellent Gavin, thank you for the superb inside knowledge!
